About Coronado CARES
Coronado CARES is a local nonprofit dedicated to protecting homeless and unadoptable animals while helping pet owners keep the animals they love. Through compassionate care, education, and accessible resources, we proudly serve Coronado and Imperial Beach—working every day to make a meaningful difference for animals and our community.
Who We Are
Coronado CARES was founded in 2012 by a group of like-minded individuals who saw a need to implement animal welfare programs that were not being addressed locally. CARES is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization. The CARES mission is to promote animal welfare, provide resources for proper animal care, and reduce the number of homeless animals.

The first program Coronado CARES implemented addressed the number of feral cats in the community. CARES volunteers began a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Program. Feral cats are cats that have been abandoned by humans and now live in the “wild” on their own. The Trap-Neuter-Return Program reduced the number of feral cats by preventing the birth of hundreds of unwanted kittens and stabilizing feral cat colonies (groups of cats living together).

In addition to the TNR Program, CARES provides a Feline Socialization Program for abandoned kittens currently awaiting their furever homes. When kittens are available, Coronado Veterinary Hospital serves as the adoption agent. CARES volunteers visit the veterinary office to brush, play with, and socialize the kittens until their furever homes are found.

Education is also a very important component of the Coronado CARES mission. CARES volunteers take every opportunity to educate the community about the plight of feral cats and homeless or underserved pets, the necessity of proper animal care, and the importance of spaying/neutering and microchipping pets. To advance their mission, Coronado CARES partners with SNAP, local veterinarians, San Diego Humane Society, IB Pet, PAWS of Coronado and others.

The work of Coronado CARES is accomplished through the generous contributions of both time and money from its volunteers and supporters. CARES always needs more volunteers and welcomes you to join their talented team of devoted, hard-working animal advocates.
